With so many people suffering from obesity these days, particularly in developed nations, it is important to understand the health risks surrounding excess weight gain. Obesity wreaks havoc on your physical body, and damages your mental state of mind; the cardiovascular problems associated with obesity affect both your physiological and neurological capacities, leading to issues like diabetes, depression, and most notably, heart disease. Heart disease is one of the most common and dangerous risks that obesity poses to people, so let’s take a closer look at the relationship between the two and what you can do to avoid engaging your body in this destructive relationship.

Obesity is defined as being overweight to the extent that a person’s BMI (Body Mass Index) is over 30. Obesity can be caused by genetic factors, such as a thyroid disorder, but it is most commonly caused by overeating, a lack of exercise, and a diet rooted in sugar, trans fat, and processed food consumption. A person suffering from obesity will have high levels of cholesterol and high blood pressure, the leading factors that cause heart disease. Additionally, obesity can cause sudden chest pains caused by a decrease in oxygen to the heart (angina) and has been known to cause sudden death from heart problems or stroke without signs or symptoms.

As evidenced above, obesity and heart disease and related and cause a serious threat to your health. The good news is that you have the ability to reduce the risk of these adverse effects now if you take your life back into your own hands and start developing healthier habits. Even if you are obese, changing your lifestyle to include exercise and healthy eating will decrease your chance for heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol; losing just 10% of your body weight will reduce these risks and get your heart back on track.

While heart problems and obesity can be caused by genetic factors, the ball is really in your court in terms of avoiding these dangerous health problems. You have the power to shape and control your eating and exercise habits-it is up to you to choose a healthy lifestyle and then make the commitment to live it day by day. New Treatments to Aid Congestive Heart Failure

Heart disease is one of the deadliest killers in the world to date. Congestive heart failure, a condition found secondary to innumerable major cardiac diseases, possesses its own high mortality rate. Fifty percent of patients who are diagnosed with congestive heart failure will die within the five following years. Scientists and researchers have always had problems understanding the exact mechanisms of the disease, and to find a cure.

Congestive heart failure begins as the cells in the heart die or stop working attributable to an event like a myocardial infarction (a heart attack) or ischemic heart disease. Whatever the cause, the heart is subsequently ineffective pumping blood throughout the body, resulting in the blood pooling in the organs and fluid building up in and around the lungs as sodium is unable to be adequately excreted, causing dyspnea that is the classic symptom of congestive heart failure.

Heart Disease Prevention Tip:Why Nuts Are Good for Heart

Today’s heart disease prevention tip has to do with nuts and how you should include them in your diet.

This came from a recent article in the May 15, 2011 issue of “Bottom Line Personal.” It says:

” Nuts are among the most potent remedies for heart health. Research shows that people who eat up to five times a week can reduce their risk for heart disease by 30% to 50%, according to the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study and other medical trials. People who eat nuts regularly have better heart health even when they eat unhealthy amounts of saturated fat or consume few fruits or vegetable.

The omega-3 fatty acids in nuts reduce arterial inflammation and the risk for clots. Nuts also contain oleic acid which improves cholesterol.

One small handful of nuts daily is good. Any kind of nut is fine, (including peanuts, which actually aren’t a nut), roasted or raw (no salt.)”

The bottom line, make sure you include nuts as part of a heart healthy diet plan everyday. Your heart will greatly benefit from it!

Heart Disease Diet-The Link Between Soft Drinks and Gout

I happened to be reading from a magazine called “Taste for Life” I picked up at a local health food store,  In the January 2011 issue, there was a brief article on women’s health. In the article, it talked aobut how soft drinks may lead to gout.  Here is what it reported:

“While men have the dubious distinction of developing gout more often than women, the in c idence of this painful arthritic condition appears to be increasing in women.

New data points to fructose in sweetened beverages as a potential culprit.

Gout isn’t just painful-it can cripple joints and may be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Gout develops as a result of uric acid in the blood that precipitates in to crystals that lodge in joints, causing pain.

In men, gout has been liked to the consumption of fructose-a sugar used to sweeten sodas, juices, and many other foods. Fructose, it appears, triggers production of uric acid in the body.

Based on the data from the large Nurses Health Study, researchers have now extended teh warning about fructose to women. They says that even one sugar-sweetened soda or juice drink a day increases the risk of gout.”

And remember that gout can also lead to heart disease. If you are like most people and want to maintain optimal health,  it’s best to pay close attention to what you are drinking!

Women’s Heart Problems-7 Steps To Lower Your Cholesterol

Women’s heart problems is a concern for many women as well as men. Due to the lifestyle and diet of the western culture, heart diease and other health concerns continue to be a problem in our country.

One of the culprits of develolping heart disease is high cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is a fatty and waxy substance that is produced by the liver. Too much of saturated fats in your diet may contribute to high blood cholesterol. Most saturated fats come from animal products such as butter, cheese, chocolate, whole milk, pies, pastries, cakes, hot chips, potatoes and hash browns.

In some individuals, high cholesterol levels can be due to a genetic disorder. Too much cholesterol in your blood will start building up in the artery walls, causing narrowing of the arteries. This increases your risk of developing heart or brain attack(stroke).

Whatever the cause of your high levels of cholesterol is, it is very important that you make efforts to lower your cholesterol levels by changing your lifestyle:

1.Follow a heart healthy dietary pattern.

2.Lose some weight if you are overweight.

3.Be active by doing moderate physical exercises for at least 30 minutes daily.

4.Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.

5.Avoid foods prepared with butter, hydrogenated oil, coconut or palm oil.

6.Avoid white meat fats, chicken skin or processed meats and chicken.

7.Have more servings of dried peas, beans, soy products, oats, whole grains and high-fibre cereals.

If your cholesterol level is too high, your doctor may put you on medication for a short time or for life. If that is the case, you should have your cholesterol levels checked every three months until it is controlled and then every six months.

In normal circumstances, cholesterol is very important as it helps our bodies to function properly. Cholesterol and other fats are also called lipids and each of these has a different function:

1.The High Density Lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL)often called the “good” cholesterol because it helps to remove cholesterol from the artery walls, thereby reducing your risk of heart disease.

2.The Low-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL) is often called “bad” cholesterol because it deposits cholesterol into the artery wall, increasing your risk of heart disease or heart attack.

3.The Triglycerides are the most common form of fat in the body. They act as energy storage tanks of the body. High levels of triglycerides cause many diseases in the body, including heart disease and stroke.

To know your lipid profile, visit you doctor and he or she will perform a fasting blood test. An ideal profiles should is:

Total cholesterol(TC) less than 4mmol/L
LDL cholesterol less than 2.5 mmol/L
HDL cholesterol greater than 1mmol/L
TC/HDL ratio less than 4.5
Triglycerides less than 1.7 mmol/L

Therefore, it is important to change your life style to remain healthy and live longer. Develop good eating habits, keep fit and enjoy life.

Women’s Heart Problems|Top 8 Heart Disease Treatments Continued

Tip #5: Make love once more. Dr. Wallack recommends you ask your doctor if you can have sex again. Many heart patients worry sex will strain their hearts and this is not true. Less than 1% of patients due of a heart attack while having sex.

Tip #7: Prepare for career issues. When Dr. Wallack was recovering, some people were tryinto get his job! Tip #8: Set exercise goals. Women’s heart problems as well as men’s can be helped with exercise. Regular exercise lowers cholesterol and blood pressure. Plus, it reduces stress. Make sure you develop a program with a rehabilitation expert who can work with you the first few months as you recuperate. This many times is covered by your insurance.
